Your teacher will be Zoë Smith. Zoë is a 200hr certified Hatha Yoga Teacher, registered with the Yoga Alliance. Zoë is currently working towards her 500hr Certification which will include Yin Yoga, Pranayama (breathwork) and meditation, classes to follow in due course!
Zoë strives to keep the classes light and fun, whilst creating and holding space to allow every individual in the group to get the most from their practice and ongoing journey of self-development.
Classes are all one hour. They begin with a short grounding to bring us back to our bodies and to connect with our practice. We then move into a standing flow followed by sun salutations, and then on to our asanas (postures). We follow the classical form of Hatha Yoga which takes 4 dynamic breaths moving into each asana and then we hold the asana for 4 static breaths, which allows us to deepen our hold and obtain the most benefits from each posture. We finish each class with a guided relaxation, breath-work and some silent sitting before floating away to enjoy the rest of our day - feeling peace and calm which we can share with everyone we meet. Namaste.
Before joining a class for the first time you will need to complete an exercise PAR-Q form and let your teacher know of any injuries or health conditions - this ensures that she can keep you safe during your practice.
Currently Zoë is not teaching pre or post-natal yoga but can sign-post any ladies this may concern to some great local classes specialising in these areas. Indeed it can be a wonderful form of exercise during and after pregnancy.
You will need to bring an exercise mat to your class - we don't provide these for hygiene reasons. Some people also enjoy bringing a blanket and/or warm socks to snuggle under during our relaxation section of class. Some people also like to bring a bottle of water to rehydrate and help flush out the toxins released in the body after practice.
As you begin your practice you may find it useful to have some yoga blocks, a strap, and perhaps a cushion or bolster. These are not necessary for everyone so it is best to begin and see what you need as you go. Our bodies are all different and (contrary to Instagram) there is no 'perfect yoga posture' - it all depends on our personal biomechanics. So there will most likely be some postures that you find more challenging than others and in this case some aids can help.

Hatha yoga is thought to date back to roughly the 11th century! The Sanskrit word “ha” means sun and “tha” means moon. "Yoga" means union. Hatha yoga is therefore about bringing together opposing polarities into one whole; or, bringing balance between the sun and the moon's energies within you. We do this principally using the different yoga asanas (postures), consciously placing our bodies in different asanas to channel our life-force energy within in different ways.
Classical Hatha yoga also focuses on the breath, and through different breathing techniques we are able to cleanse and clear any blockages within our internal energy channels. In our practice we coordinate the body movement with the breath, using the breath to envelope our movements. Hatha yoga uses a particular type of breath known as 'ujjayi breath' or 'ocean breath' - named because the sound reflects that of the waves of the ocean. In this way we focus on the present moment and consciously connect body and mind which in turn really works to calm the mind. We use the different postures to direct the energy within our bodies in different ways, to recognise that we are all made of the same energy, we are all one, we are at union in yoga.
There are many benefits of adding Hatha Yoga to your life, physical and mental, here we summarise the main effects.
